"Because of You" foi co-escrita por Clarkson, Ben Moody e David Hodges, e produzida por Moody e Hodges. A canção é uma das mais pessoais para Clarkson, já que foi escrita quando ela tinha 16 anos e estava lidando com sua dor emocional. Clarkson já declarou que apesar de sua dor já ter sido superada por Deus, ela ainda pode relacionar-se à dor de "Because of You". A canção acabou tornando-se um sucesso mundial.
Anos depois, quando se encontrou com Moody e Hodges, Clarkson perguntou se eles poderiam compor canções com ela. Ela pediu a eles para ajudá-la a melhorar "Because of You" para o álbum Breakaway, mas disse que entenderia se eles não gostassem da canção e decidissem compor uma nova com ela. Ao invés disso, tanto Moody quanto Hodges ficaram impressionados com a canção, e junto de Clarkson, melhoraram-na até sua forma final. Nesse hino emocional autobiográfico, Clarkson lamenta por sua turbulenta vida familiar ao cantar: "Por sua causa, eu nunca fico longe da calçada/ Aprendi a jogar no lado seguro, para que eu não me machuque/ Por sua causa, acho difícil confiar não só em mim/ Como em todos em minha volta/ Por sua causa, eu tenho medo".
Assim como em "Behind These Hazel Eyes", a própria Clarkson escreveu o clipe, que foi dirigido por Vadim Perelman (diretor do filme Casa de Areia e Névoa). O clipe é baseado em fatos reais da infância problemática de Clarkson (devido ao conteúdo do vídeo, ela pediu permissão aos pais antes de criá-lo). A jovem Clarkson é interpretada pela filha de 7 anos de Jason Halbert, membro da banda.
O clipe inicia numa tarde na residência dos Clarkson. Lá, Kelly e seu marido estão discutindo fortemente, e em um ponto ele tira uma foto da família e ameaça amassá-la. No entanto, ele nunca obtém a chance de fazer isso, já que o tempo congela e ele fica imóvel; Clarkson, no entanto, está imune a isso. Procurando nos cantos de sua casa, ela vê um vulto que a surpreende: ela mesma, mais nova.
Juntas, a jovem Clarkson e a Clarkson mais velha revivem memórias ruins da infância de Clarkson, tais como: a jovem Clarkson fazendo um desenho para o pai, este jogando o presente na pia e a mãe de Clarkson fazendo um jantar que não agradou ao pai de Clarkson. Esses eventos levam sua mãe ao ponto de tomar pílulas e chorar publicamente em frente à sua filha.
O ponto de tensão ocorre quando os pais de Clarkson brigam fisicamente e atiram objetos uns nos outros. Logo após isso, o pai de Clarkson faz as malas, enquanto finalmente deixa a família; apesar da jovem Clarkson tentar fazê-lo ficar, ele vai embora. Cheia de memórias de seu passado, a Clarkson mais velha já viu o suficiente e retorna para o presente. Lá, o tempo descongela e ao invés de brigar com o marido, eles se beijam. A própria filha de Clarkson pode ser vista caminhando na esquina. Clarkson finalmente quebrou o ciclo de possuir uma família com problemas.
O clipe de "Because of You" estreou oficialmente no programa Total Request Live da MTV norte-americana em 3 de outubro de 2005. No dia seguinte, apareceu em primeiro lugar. Eventualmente tornou-se o terceiro clipe de Clarkson a ser tirado do ar, após passar 27 dias (de 50) na primeira posição.
“’Because Of You’ isn’t about breakups, it’s about my family. It is about growing up in a broken home. My parents were together for 17 years or so, and then all of the sudden, something went wrong. But I’ve talked to lots of friends who have seen domestic violence in their homes; I didn’t. But if you see those things as a child, you see a family member cheating or people not trusting each other or people not communicating with each other, that effects you. You end up afraid to trust people, because you think you’re going to get screwed over. Me and a friend of mine were up late one night talking about our lives, and it led to this song. I wrote it when I was 16, my friend was having a really hard time with her family. It was a different situation than mine, but I could relate to what she was going through. My parents were together for a long time, and suddenly one thing happens, and it’s over. That could happen to me. It made me feel like, why would I want to open up and trust someone? I know that it’s a childish way to look at it; life is a risk, and anything worth having is worth taking a risk for, but I wrote it when I was 16. I have learned a lot since then. At the same time, it doesn’t matter how old you are, you can still relate. I was 6 when my parents got divorced. I used to be the most closed off person. I didn’t want to get hurt. I had been messed over by friends, and I had been through a lot with my family. I didn’t pity myself, but I did put a wall up. I’m smarter now, but I have a good relationship with God, and that’s gotten better over the years. That’s why I’ve gotten smarter about situations. I’m a very trusting person now. I’m not going to let people screw me over left and right, but at the same time I’m not going to close myself off. That’s a big step for me.”
